I am very grateful that Antony Loewenstein has brought his meticulous reporting to this subject, and the result is a keenly observed and timely investigation into rampant resource plunder, privatized detention centers, and an array of other forms of corporate rapacity on four continents. "The forces of disaster capitalism are increasingly on the defensive, but their attacks on the global commons have expanded in the years since I wrote The Shock Doctrine.

Levine and Heller’s confusing definitions may result from their attempt at originality. But the authors heavily imply that protest behavior must negatively impact the relationship: All of their examples of protest behavior feature unhealthy relationship behaviors, and they describe protest behavior as something you “resort to” when you’re unable to effectively communicate your needs. Additionally, they define “protest behavior” as “any action that tries to reestablish contact with your partner and get their attention.” By this definition, calling your partner once because she’s late coming home-an action most would find reasonable-is protest behavior. Despite using the word “strategy,” they define an “activating strategy” exclusively as a thought or feeling- not an action or plan. Levine and Heller’s definitions of the terms “activating strategies” and “protest behavior” are somewhat confusing. An art student and monster’s apprentice must decide how far she’ll go to avenge her people in this riveting sequel to the mesmerizing, acclaimed book Daughter of Smoke & Bone by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor - now with a gorgeous new package! Those were the two chapters that I enjoyed tremendously. The second chapter deals with the Silo's mayor, trying to find out why Sheriff Holston acted like he did, and unraveling the hidden power structure of the Silo that she herself hadn't understood fully. It's the main riddle of the first chapter, and it's deftly handled with a nice turn of events. One of the big mysteries is why all those delinquents actually clean the cameras, before walking off to die. The execution is called “cleaning” the condemned is put into a life suit (that's not really working), gets some woolen cleaning pads and is shoved out of the Silo where he cleans the cameras' lenses showing the inhabitants the world outside. Which is not only anathema in this society, but results in an automatic death sentence, without any need for an investigation. The reader is immediately thrust into the action and needs to orient himself, and quick: Sheriff Holston, the top law enforcement officer of the Silo, enters his office, wishes his deputy a good morning and casually says that he would like to go outside. The book's setting is the eponymous “Silo”, a metal tube mostly underground where the remnants of mankind live, locked away from the barren and toxic outside. It started as a short story, but expanded into more parts, finally got published as an Omnibus edition, and gained a prequel (Shift).
